Originally, the Alexander cocktail was made by mixing equal parts of gin, crème de cacao liqueur, and cream. As time passed, various spirits were introduced as substitutes for gin, with brandy as the most popular option. As the recipe evolved over time, modern versions tend to be stronger in alcohol by including more of the base spirit. Contemporary Alexander variations frequently feature alternative liqueurs instead of crème de cacao.
