Byens Gin is a collaboration that brings our city together. Literally. From Østerbro to Amager; from the youth leagues playing at Kløvermarken to Superliga in Parken.
For three decades, the white and blue of FCK have been the city's team with a passion that spans from their sport and their teammates to their fans. They’ve given a lot of people the opportunity to share experiences, feelings and friendships despite how different they might be off the field.
And from our very beginning, Copenhagen Distillery has been the city's distillery. The bar is always open to curious guests, and there’s always room for parties, talks and concerts. The distillery is a space where the city can meet itself, where you can gather around common passions, exchange new ideas and be inspired.
So now FCK and Copenhagen Distillery come together and learn from the common ground between nature and culture and balance the raw with the refined. Because together we have the history of the city in our blood. Byens Gin is a continuation of that history; it’s about giving back and paying tribute to the city that’s uniquely ours — a city that is changing and unchanging at the same time.
"We're extremely pleased with the collaboration with Copenhagen Distillery — and not least the result!” says Martin Nøhr, Merchandise & Retail Operations Manager, F.C. København.
“We wanted to give something to all the people who support the team and to Copenhageners in general. We have a lot of respect for our fans and for our city. Every time we walk on the pitch, we represent the city. Every time we have to give our best.”
He continues, “Copenhagen Distillery knows this feeling. They approach their craft with the same dedication and passion that we do. That's why we trust that they were the right people to lead Byens Gin to the finish line."
Lasse Öznek, the Master Distiller at Copenhagen Distillery adds:
"Despite the fact that our two industries seem very different, there are actually many parallels between creating a good gin and a good football team. In both cases, it's about knowing the players' — or ingredients' — distinctive qualities and potential. It's about figuring out how to get the best out of them individually and especially in combination with others. Of course, it takes a certain amount of talent, but it also takes practice, craftsmanship and dedication to create something that’s more than the sum of its individual parts."
Martin Nøhr goes on:
"There are artisanal parallels, but we also share a certain set of values. A passion for quality and experiences; to enjoy life together. It's about emotion and community and meeting across superficial differences to celebrating everything we have in common."
Byens Gin is made for sharing those magical moments. For celebration and enjoyment. The taste is a balance between the powerful and the elegant. Just as football should be. Just like our city is.
A classic combination of juniper berries and citrus compliments more powerful spice notes from juniper leaves and angelica root. Cranberry and a touch of allspice give balance to the gin before the last special touch that Lasse Öznek explains:
"Our lawns and parks are green, illuminated by colourful flowers that spread the unmistakable scent of Danish summer. This slightly perfumed and slightly herbaceous expression should of course be included in Byens Gin — and the choice of flowers almost goes without saying. Our distillery is located at Kløvermarken on Amager, and FCK is, as you know, the city's lions. Therefore, Byens Gin is distilled with both clover and dandelion."
The 'dry' gin expression makes Byens Gin an obvious starter in any gin-based cocktail. So here are four good suggestions for use:
In a classic Gin and Tonic, ByensGin comes through with a clear yet balanced edge and the green notes provide a lovely freshness.
Still, Byens Gin is more than these dry and floral notes. There is a subtle bittersweetness in the taste, which, in the right mixture, can be highlighted with a rhubarb or grapefruit tonic.
Use Byens Gin to step out of the ordinary and make a Gin Julep with fresh mint, sugar syrup and ginger ale.
Or enjoy a Lion's Martini — a classic dry martini with a few drops of blue curacao to match the city’s colours.
